The Arts, many and varied, that constitute the diverse Martial Arts that are collectively referred to as Silat & Kali encompass a vast and myriad range of styles incorporating techniques from literally hundreds if not thousands of systems involving both empty hand and weapons based styles. Indeed these styles and systems originate from all across Indonesia, Malaysia and the Southern Phillipines. This is reflected within the title of Guro Inosanto’s own personal style of Silat known as Maphilindo and which is a composite derived from the words Malaysia; Phillipines; and Indonesia. The Indonesian systems are Often referred to as Pejak Silat the two terms literally translated meaning distinctively Self-Defence and the form or ‘Art’ of self-defence. Thus whilst integrally linked these two distinct elements can be distinguished and practiced separately. Indeed different practitioners and systems may often have a totally different emphasis within their training based upon one or other form. |
